Washington Nationals Youth Baseball

Academy Washington, DC

The Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy The Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy (WNBA) is located on Elly Place in Fort DuPont Park in Northeast Washington D.C. The Facility will be a state of the art, 20,000 SF LEED (silver) Certified building. The overall project scope include 3 regulation youth baseball fields, batting cages, grandstand seating for 500+, press box, maintenance facility, and an Administrative/ Training/ Learning Facility. Through cost effective design strategies, we will be able to reduce the building life cycle cost and its impact on the environment. The first strategy was locating the project in a Park setting which was accessible by public transportation. The building orientation is North/South with the main entrance to the North to minimize heat gain in a two story lobby. The East, West, and South Elevations have a continuous over hang for shading. Also, there is a metal perforated screen that protects the windows from foul balls. The screen also adds to the reduction of heat gain on the east and west facades. There is an efficient stormwater management system for the building, site, and ball fields, water-efficient fixtures, composite and recycled products for the interior and exterior, white membrane roofing, sensor lighting, energy-efficient mechanical systems, and numerous locations on site to park bikes. Not only will this facility produce a future first-round draft pick for the Nationals, but will educate the users in a number of ways about how we can help sustain our environment.
