TURKEY THICKET
RECREATION CENTER WASHINGTON, DC
The Turkey Thicket project brings a new pool and full recreation cen- ter to Brookland, a neighborhood adjacent to Catholic University. A small existing park house will be demolished to make way for the new 31,000 square foot facility. The project includes a 25 meter pool area with seating for approximately 300 spectators, a whirlpool spa and wading pool. The center also includes a basketball court with adja- cent spectator seating for approximately 200 people, exercise room, locker rooms, and large multi-purpose/ meeting rooms. We worked closely with the Department of Parks and Recreation and the com- munity to create the long awaited “state of the art” facility. The large central lobby will provide views into all venues and allow for secu- rity and simple building control. An aluminum structure housing the natatorium will resist corrosion caused by the humid climate and the translucent roof will provide ample light year round. We were able to provide the Department of Parks and Recreation with an innovative and attractive design on a limited budget.
